MALFOY'S CHOICE

Another digital preliminary study for an oil painting illustrating the Harry Potter books. This on depicts the scene from HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE when Draco Malfoy has disarmed Dumbledore and must decide whether he can bring himself to kill him now that he has the chance. Harry, under his invisibility cloak, unseen by Draco, looks on but has been paralyzed by Dumbledore for his own protection (and, perhaps, so that he not interfere with Dumbledore's interrogation of Malfoy).

Of course, I had to "cheat" on the invisibility, making him visible to the viewer. Invisibility is always a problem for illustrators when it comes up in a fantasy story. I choose to simply show him to the viewers with it being understood that, while he's visible to them, he cannot be seen by Malfoy.

Next I'll be doing a study for the scene from the same book in which Harry injures Malfoy unintentionally using the curse he learned from the book of the Half Blood Prince.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL LANDSCAPE NO. 4

14 x 18 inches. Oil on canvas.

SOLD

AN AVERAGE DAY AT HOGWARTS

Another preliminary study for a Harry Potter painting. In this one I imagine Harry having been on the grounds of Hogwarts after classes when Draco comes up to him making his usual taunts. As Harry walks away, trying to ignore him, Draco makes a particularly nasty comment about Harry's parents. This shows the moment when Harry has taken out his wand---struggling with the impulse to turn around and cast a curse on him before suppressing the urge and walking on without a backward glance.

Not a specific scene from one of the stories. Just something I imagine to be a common experience for Harry at Hogwarts.

I think when I do the painting I may show Draco's wand in his hand at his side

SEVERUS SNAPE

Digital preliminary study of Severus Snape in his potions laboratory which will serve as the basis for one of my next oil paintings.

Another sketch of the Whomping Willow. This time from the other side with Hogwarts in the background. Done in acrylic on masonite (5 x 7 inches) with a little digital enhancement to the photo. I plan to finish the painting in oils in 2 or 3 more sittings and have it posted for sale when its done.

Some color and a few modifications to the last sketch. I'm going to try some sketches of the Quidditch field next.

Whomping Willow Concept Sketch No. 2

Whomping Willow Sketch No. 1

The first in a series of rough sketches of the grounds surrounding Hogwarts for a possible commission.

Here's a second concept sketch for the Harry Potter painting.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire digital sketch

This is a rough digital concept sketch for a Harry Potter painting I'm planning to do. It depicts the scene in which he is pursued by a dragon while flying on his broom in the Tri-Wizard tournament. The figures of both Harry and the dragon were created by creating rough sculptural studies, or maquettes. This working method allows me to try out a wide variety of different compositions very quickly during the concept stage.

I'll probably do several other variations of the composition before settling on the one to serve as the basis for the final oil painting.

DRAGON RIDER

This is a small, 5 x 7 inch fantasy oil painting I'm currently working on. Two or three more sittings and it should be completed. I plan to do a larger version, possibly with a different, daytime, color scheme once its finished.

COUNTRY ROAD

5 x 7 inches. Oil on hardboard.

Friday, October 10, 2008

A couple of rough digital sketches for science fiction oil paintings. I plan to get these, and DRAGON RIDER, started this week.
